It was encouraging seeing the youth excited and learning as the night progressed. We started with a tongue twisting crowd breaker, which had everyone in hysterics. Then Gary Grut, National Manager for Baptist Youth Ministries, brought a message for everyone on “The Heart of a Leader”. This covered important areas like servanthood and the need for a personal relationship with God. His catch phrase was that “we are God’s masterpiece that reflects his creativity.”
This was followed by four different options for the young people to choose from.
Heather Ameye-Bevers, the National BYM Administrator, led a session on “Being young and capable”. Greg Liston who is a part-time lecturer communicated on the critical issue of “The place and importance of scripture”. Blue Bradley, the Northern Easter Camp Director, spoke on “Knowing yourself and knowing God’ and the fourth session was led by Nigel Cottle, Auckland Baptist Association Youth and Young Adult Ministry Coach, led a session on “Leading small groups”.
Overall the night was a huge success and the vibe and energy in the room was amazing. Youth Pastors and young people were saying, “We have to do this more regularly”. Bring on the next Grow Night!
Alan Ameye is Regional Youth Ministry Coach for the Auckland Baptist Association.
