Priya grew up with a loving father but lost her mother due to social injustice. She attended a Catholic school although it was not the faith of her family. Later she worked with an NGO in a needy red light area in our city. When the NGO left, she stayed.

Standing on the train platform at Berhampore, I was pondering the last few days in Murshidabad. As in previous trips, I’d come from Kolkata with many questions and was returning with few answers. Where does one begin to make a difference in a massive district where poverty has led so many communities, over many generations, to do the unthinkable: sell their daughters into the sex trade?
In the past I’ve been a little suspicious about short-term mission. I wondered if it failed to connect to all the levels Jesus had in mind when he commanded us to go in his name.
