Jill Bambery – a life of service

A life of service to both church and the Baptist denomination by Jill Bambery, a long-time member of Palmerston North Central Baptist who passed away last August, is culminated by significant bequests she left to a variety of church, missionary and community groups.

Jill was the only child of Mona and Arch Bambery who became members of Central Baptist during the ministry of Rev Alan Finlay. Both Mona and Arch became very active in the church. Arch was a deacon, and the general superintendent when the church embraced the “All Ages Sunday School” movement of the late 1950s and 1960s.

Gloria Dalziell

gloriadalziellGloria and her husband, Don, came to Bangladesh in 1989 to do medical work as a result of devastating floods the year before. Don had recently retired from general practice as a doctor and so was available to serve God overseas several times in periods of one to three years during the following 10 years.

Before Don and Gloria arrived, there was discussion about what to call them. The senior nursing staff decided that Dadu and Didima – grandfather and grandmother – would suit best because of their age, and these names stuck. The name followed Gloria to New Zealand and that’s what her grandchildren call her. Her car even had a “Didima” number plate.

Bethel Hui, 1955 – 2010

bethelhuiOn Christmas Eve 2010, Bethel Hui passed away after succumbing to pancreatic cancer. Bethel had been the voluntary pastor of Epsom Baptist Church’s Saturday night Chinese/English congregation since planting it in 2005.

His death has been a shock not only to all of us at Epsom Baptist Church, but also to the wider Chinese community. Bethel is survived by his wife Willa and children Jasmine and Jacob.

Bethel Hui was born in Hong Kong in 1955. From the age of 8 he began attending various church activities. At some point he was deeply touched by the gospel message and made a commitment to following Jesus. The behavioural change observed in him added effectiveness to his passionate gospel witness.

Isabel Lee, 1988 – 2010

isabel“I am not afraid of death; I am afraid of a life not lived for His glory.”

Born in Korea on the October 9, 1988, Isabel Lee passed into God’s presence 22 years later on December 3, 2010.

Isabel was a typical young woman in one sense, but very untypical in another. She was typical in that she loved life and good things. Isabel came to New Zealand with her mum and dad and sister when she was about six, and had a good upbringing. She was very intelligent, bright, attractive and outgoing, a typical young woman you might say. She was home educated until the last two years of her education before going to the Elim Christian College, where she became Head Girl. She went on to university and studied law.
