Thank you for the article about Pastor Roland Hart in the February edition.
I was a WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) in Wigram fom 1943 to 1945 and in fact served Roland when he came to the clothing store for his officer’s uniform. Our store tailor did the measuring and the uniforms were tailored in Christchurch. Shirts, shoes etc. were issued from our store.
Pastor Hart instigated a Bible study in the delightful chapel on station. I and a few others attended. I recall with great affection one verse of scripture which has remained with me since those days. It is John 14:23 and in the margin of my Bible I printed “personal guests.”
Some years later when peace and Civvy Street followed and we had all married the service man for whom we had waited, I read in the Church Notices of the Southland Times where Pastor Roland Hart was to be the guest speaker at North Invercargill Baptist Church.
Those were the nights when we were able to venture out alone and not be afraid. How lovely it was to meet this dear padre again. In fact, he came next morning to our home to meet my husband, Allan, and our first daughter Elizabeth – and for morning tea.
Thank you again for memories stirred of a fine Christian gentleman.
