So you’re running a childcare, so is the person down the road! Is there any difference? Could someone who visited both your centre and the one down the road see or feel any difference?
Are you all about making profit or are you there to make sure the babies of your community are cared for and given every opportunity to develop and learn?
The media seemed to be hitting ECE centres quite hard last month with an article “Naught to Five - The Daycare Experiment” in the North and South Magazine and then on the News! What I found most interesting was that there is very little research done on the effects of Children who are Under Two and in ECE. They raised the argument that their brains are designed to be developing areas relating to love, security and cuddles, not education. What is your Under Two Philosophy? Can you back it up with research?
I have recently started sending my staff on the Babyspace conferences run by Pennie Brownie, many of her theories come from the work carried out in Budapest . It is basically all about the children!! She looks at following the child’s lead in the way their day is carried out, talking to the baby, face to face to let them know that are about to be picked up. Talking them through being changed so that they can realise they are safe and will relax, which make dressing and changing a baby far easier and more pleasant for everyone.
It really is worth stopping and thinking about. I can highly recommend her book ‘Dance with Me in the Heart’.
