Coffee Break Jan 2010

KelvynDear Friends,

Greetings for 2010 – it is hard to get “10” down on paper after 9 years of writing “0X” but given another couple of weeks I imagine it will be routine.

I wonder what this year will hold for you? I know some of the things that we have planned but I also seek to live in the maxim we find in the wisdom of Proverbs 19:21 “We humans keep brainstorming options and plans but God’s purpose prevails”. (The Message). I am keen to live a little less pressured this year than last and have taken action accordingly. I want to remain fit and healthy and keep growing in my faith with a regular expectation that the Scriptures will keep coming alive for me.

Many of you will be or have been easing back into the weekly and monthly routines of ministry, church, and family life. Routines normally give security and comfort of which we all need a certain amount to function well in life. The non routine periods can be risky or adventurous, refreshing or traumatic, stimulating or draining, or perhaps all of those mixed together.

I have enjoyed a refreshing break at Waihi where I was able to potter about with my tools on a couple of projects, enjoy harvesting from the gardens, watch some cricket and tennis on the box, and have time with some grandchildren and their parents.

On New Years Day Mary and I with friends were able to revisit Wentworth Valley (Whangamata) where we started to get friendly on the same day 41 years previously. Still a gravel road, but the ford has been concreted, the track to the falls is so risk averse it is like a suburban footpath, and the falls do not have as much water. But the scenery and memories are great.

The year in our local church has also begun well as our new pastoral team leader has commenced and we look forward to some new adventures in local mission, and I pray the same for you in your place with your people.

The Lenten journey begins this year with Shrove Tuesday on 16 February. It is a great time to teach and practise some of the spiritual disciplines in preparation for Easter.
