Dr Chris Marshall: Restorative Justice

Dr Marshall talked about the dimensions of restorative care, and used the Good Samaritan story as illustration. He pulled out some pertinent points about the Good Samaritan, namely that:

  • He didn’t look superficially at the situation.
  • His heart was moved with compassion.
  • He engaged with the situation.
  • He provided care as long as it was needed.

The Samaritan was totally engaged in emergency care and in environmental aid, and he ended the isolation of the victim, which led to restorative justice. And restorative justice is to love our neighbours - or to put it another way, to love our neighbours is to love justice.

Citing the quote ‘Charity alone can enslave’, Dr Marshall cautioned that the provider is implicated once aid has been given. So those who intervene need to consider the effect and negotiate the outcomes, and be concerned and try to remedy them; otherwise the victim can end up in a dependent relationship.
