Social conscience

John Tucker’s excellent Assembly presentation, “The death of the Baptist social conscience” must challenge us all to carefully consider what our agenda, as the body of Christ, should be.

Christ is our example, bringing salvation for the lost, compassion for the poor and condemnation on oppressive or dishonest leadership. Consider His attitude to the immoral money changers and traders in His father’s house. Why then do we as Christ’s representatives remain, officially, silent? Are we not concerned? Or are we afraid to raise our voice?

There seems little doubt that our country is going down the tubes morally and spiritually. The last decade has brought legalised, easy abortion, civil unions officially recognised plus gay and lesbian groups now actively promoting their immoral lifestyles in schools and universities, easy booze for younger kids, and our justice system has become more liberal dealing out softer penalties.

As God’s people, we must decide: Will we remain silent? Before God, we dare not. We must obey our Master. Our Lord Jesus Christ commands us to “Let our light shine.” As Christ’s church, we are Christ’s solution to the world’s problems. While we do not speak up the silence is indeed deafening.
