Even though Christians have faith in a bright future through the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ, it doesn’t make us immune from depression. Dr Richard Winter is a psychotherapist who brings a medical, psychological and spiritual perspective to the illness.
The first part of the book describes in readable layman’s language just what depression is, how it manifests itself and what the treatments are. He goes on to describe the impact of despair, loss, anger, guilt, shame and spiritual warfare.
Obviously, the most interesting aspect of the book is the way the author interprets depression in a Christian context. He explores what the Bible has to say about depression – which, surprisingly, is quite a lot (and what Shakespeare has to say, through some quotes at the beginning of each chapter – perhaps less surprising!).
He then goes on to show how the Word of God can help provide a path to healing, while at the same time he takes note of what the medical profession has learnt. Included in this are discussions on the power of forgiveness and the importance of relationships. The book concludes with a discussion of spiritual warfare and whether, or how, demonic influences affect depression.
And finally, there are the usual end-of-chapter discussion questions. American publishers seem to assume we are all incapable of discussing a book without their help.
At 250 pages, this is a concise yet highly educational treatment of a complex subject. It is a valuable tool for anyone who has a friend or family member suffering from this frequently misunderstood illness. Or for one who is, perhaps themselves, in the midst of a dark place.
