Times when church buildings are vital

I was somewhat concerned about Tim Wright’s short-sighted letter in the June edition of the NZ Baptist regarding church buildings.

While I understand some aspects of his argument against churches owning huge buildings, it must be said that such a blanket approach is not healthy for developing strong churches now or in the future. There are times when a church building is vital in the development of a church.

The church I attend is blessed with a fantastic, multi-purpose building that enables our church to reach the community seven days a week for very little cost. This has only been possible by the hard work, sacrifice and dedication from church members 50 years ago. That may have been their specific role all those years ago, and if it was it has provided a good foundation for our church to build on.

While some people believe the devil smiles at seeing someone mowing the church lawn, I believe the devil trembles when he sees our man doing the lawn because he knows there is something going on in that church and it is affecting the community.

However, in a show of goodwill regarding Tim’s point, I have requested our elders dig up the lawn around our church and put in concrete.
