Canterbury/Otago – July 2012

Oxford Terrace

The installation of the 105 white chairs to remember the people who lost their lives in the earthquake in February 2011 has been a remarkable event. Some of the comments left in the visitors book were quite moving. Midweek hymns was a fantastic time and the desire to hold this on a monthly basis was affirmed. Breakfast before church has been a great success.

Our property research group met again. Professional advise indicate there is not too much that can be done until September when the so-called 100 day blueprint is produced by CERA. Our minister, Chris, and wife Julie will be on a month’s leave to Regent College in Vancouver. 

North East Valley

We are happy to report that Rev Steve O’Connor accepted our invitation to be an interim part-time pastor for the next year. The church gardens are immaculate after work by Vicky Paul, Ann Hoyle, and Jane and Lindsay Guild. Dr Derek Allan of Troppodoc is due to speak on his work in voluntary NGO healthcare in developing countries. Carole Randall, one of our organists, conducts a choir performing in the Royal Male Choir concert this month, and she will be in South Africa with the NZ Secondary Students Choir in July.

Owaka

We have farewelled Alison Paterson, our wonderful pianist and friend, who moved to Dunedin. It has been significant focusing on Self Denial and learning more about Kalasin in Thailand. We have combined church services at our church four times a year. 

South Dunedin

BMF Day of Prayer was held. Follow-up classes are being held for new Christians. A number of people attended Mission Expo. Church and Rainbow Community House was opened by the Mayor. Youth Group fundraisers will be a car wash and café and art auction. Visiting speakers were Lindsay Jones and Neil Perry.
