At first glance this could have been another church album that screams “I want to be Hillsong” the whole CD long. Had that been the goal of this album, C3 would have failed terribly, producing a collection of songs inappropriate for congregational singing.
Yet there remains something unique within this album which I found exciting. The track Lift has an indie dance feel, reminiscent of New Zealand band theNakedandFamous. Summer sounds deceptively simple but features complex rhythmic ideas that show the true virtuosity of the musicians.
Sprinkled between the CD’s upbeat songs are some truly amazingly gems – slow, soaking, worshipful songs that leave you wanting to close your eyes and bask in God’s presence.
However, despite a glimmer of uniqueness, the album feels like C3 is afraid to commit 100% to presenting something completely different from the generic worship sound. I found it disappointing that they didn’t take a bigger step forward, but it was a great start.
Three and a half stars out of five
