Lyn's Letter

The subject of trusts and their relationship with both church and community initiatives, is one which causes considerable discussion, debate and sometimes, angst.

Recently I spent time with Glen Eden Baptist Church, speaking at two Sunday services, having discussions with a combined group of church staff, trust members and church leadership, plus an interactive half day workshop with VisionWest Community Trust managers, Trust chair and an associate pastor. This interaction enabled a helpful understanding of the bigger picture of the Trust's role in facilitating the implementation of the mission of Glen Eden Baptist Church, the church leadership's role in equipping the church for God's mission in their community, and the partnership between faith community and community ministries. I'm hoping it was valuable for those who participated.

One thing is very clear to me – when trusts understand that their role is primarily to support the mission of the church in the community, there is much less likelihood of issues over power and control. When God's grace, shared vision and partnership in God's mission are guiding decision making, various partners can work collaboratively, and maybe God breathes a sigh of relief!

Another key principle is for churches and trusts to first engage with their communities to identify actual, rather than perceived needs. Parklands Baptist Church has built high levels of trust in their community in Christchurch through effective and inclusive community conversations, which have informed their decision making about what to do to serve people's needs.Sometimes churches, trusts, and personnel involved in the community act as if they are the font of all knowledge about what their community needs, yet they haven't bothered to go ask.

I hope your church, trust and community initiative leaders are working hard to ensure that relationships are healthy and mutually respectful so your investment of time, money, prayer and effort gets the best possible return in changed lives.

Blessings,
