One thing I’ve enjoyed in my time as a Christian has been getting to hear various cultures worship God in their own ways, whether Indian, Polynesian or Maori. During those times, one thing I’ve never thought to myself was, “I wish this would sound a bit more like Hillsong.” Now, I review a lot of worship albums, and they often blend into one another, so imagine my excitement when I fired up Seth Condrey’s new Spanish-language effort. I was hoping for something with its own flavour, something I hadn’t heard a hundred times before.
Sadly, the first track, “Christo Vive Hoy,” didn’t take long to sound like a parody: telecasters playing delayed dotted eighth notes, an overall Brit-rock sound (upbeat but not edgy enough to offend), and randomly yelled encouragement between the highly emotive sounding lines. I was almost expecting Darlene Zschech to pop up and yell, “Church, are you ready to worship!?”
This really is just like every other mediocre worship album out there, except it’s sung in Spanish. And somehow, that makes it even more disappointing.
