Jimmy Needham – Clear The Stage

cdneedhamPop music can be thoughtful and, on Clear The Stage, Jimmy Needham proves this. Whether he’s wading in the waters of Maroon 5, Jack Johnson or even Bruno Mars, Needham sounds confident and his songs sound well-made. The modernised take on funk of the opener, “I Will Find You,” is instantly appealing, while “Rock Bottom” moves from syncopated verses to a beautifully unfolding chorus. “Stay” even comes close to Simon and Garfunkel territory with its gentle harmonies.

Even though this album is slickly produced, it still manages to sound incredibly organic and laid-back, which is certainly a neat trick.

This isn’t a perfect album, though; lyrically, Needham doesn’t break much new ground. This is mostly the classic mix of life, relationships and God that many CCM musicians rely on, though Needham doesn’t really come out with any clangers, either.

If you’re after something catchy, smooth and heartfelt, then Clear The Stage wouldn’t be a bad bet at all. It’s a pop album that doesn’t just go through the motions, but actually has a beating heart.
