Derek Webb – Feedback

cdderekwebbWriting about music invites hyperbole, but it’s not an exaggeration to suggest that Derek Webb is one of the most creative artists around at the moment, Christian or otherwise. His last album, Stockholm Syndrome, was a classic, both lyrically and musically provocative. Feedback is Webb’s latest project, and this time he’s decided to make a worship album with a difference.

This record is an instrumental meditation on the Lord’s Prayer, and it comes packaged with photographs and artwork that are intended to aid in worshipful reflection. With Feedback, Webb has for the most part left behind the hiccupping Kid A style electronica of his last album, though bleeps and bloops do surface from time to time to provide a bit of colour. There is a much more organic chamber-pop sound here, which comes across like a happy blend of Arcade Fire and Sufjan Stevens.

An instrumental worship album with accompanying visual aids might seem a little bit highbrow to some people, so this isn’t for everyone. But for people who connect best with God through contemplation or creativity, Feedback is wonderfully original.

Four and a half stars out of five
