When does a band stop being a band and start becoming a soulless industry? My guess is that it happens somewhere along the 25-year journey of losing and replacing 12 band members (including two singers). Whenever it happens, I’m pretty sure it culminates in the re-release of an exceedingly average album, bundling it with a 3D cover and calling it the Miracles Edition. Apparently, the “miracle” is the ability to redeem a free video download of the title track, but I shouldn’t forget to mention the 10 bonus tracks that come with this album. It’s all highly fresh and original fare like “Mighty To Save” (two versions!) and a re-recorded, live version of “Jesus Freak.”
In all seriousness, there was a time when no one could rival Newsboys in concise pop song-writing (remember “Breakfast”?) So, to see them mining the depths of cliché here, not to mention calling on a pair of generic pop producers to help them write most of these songs, is rather tragic, and I say that as a fan.
