Hyland – Weight & Measures

cdhylandIn many ways, Weights & Measures ticks all the boxes for a Christian rock release. It was produced by Aaron Sprinkle, released on Tooth and Nail Records and it features a simple, radio-buffed sound. But, for a debut album, it’s also pretty impressive. Hyland is a band with a firm grasp on melody, and songs such as “Jumping The Gun” and “Heart To Life” use this strength well – sounding confident, catchy and well-constructed.

Hyland follow the current trend with this kind of music and dust their songs with some light electronic and emo elements. At times they sound like they’re trying very hard to be Anberlin. Then there are the slower songs, most of which sound mawkish rather than meaningful. But despite these missteps, this young group has produced a solid and respectable hard rock effort here. They don’t aim for the stars, but what they do, they do well. Of course, they are just one of many Christian bands with this sound, but if you’re a big radio-rock fan then Hyland may satisfy.

Three and a half stars out of five
