Jeremy Camp is a guy who traffics in stock-standard modern rock. If you’ve ever heard a Daughtry song, then you’ll be familiar with it. And, if you’ve ever thought it would be nice to have a modern worship album in that style (and you didn’t like Kutless), you’ll probably be satisfied with this one. There are some fairly good original songs here, most of all “Unrestrained,” which actually breaks from type (and title) by being a subtle, restrained and pleasant worship song. Regrettably, the majority of We Cry Out consists of covers of worship standards such as “Mighty To Save.” Regrettable, because Camp’s versions generally do nothing to improve on the original versions. This is because his growly, Eddie Vedder-aping voice is not light enough to avoid making these songs sound somewhat stodgy by comparison. So fantastic songs like Matt Redman’s “You Never Let Go” end up robbed of their energy. But, on the plus side, the production is full and punchy, and the lyrics would suit congregational worship.
Two and a half stars out of five.
