World Cup

A few months back I wrote in the NZ Baptist about how Baptist churches in the UK were planning events around the FIFA Soccer World Cup, to connect with people who would not normally go to church. I suggested New Zealand churches may wish to consider doing something similar in the lead-up to, and during, the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

My comments touched a chord among some readers obviously, as following publication various people told me about different ideas for ministry around major sports events, including ideas and links provided by Christian Sports Network New Zealand.

A colleague alerted me to an article in the August 18 edition of Missions Catalyst
(www.missionscatalyst.net). The article reported that churches in South Africa, the nation that hosted the FIFA World Cup, saw answers to their prayers for salvations, healings and a significant reduction in crime, especially violent crime, during the time of the Cup matches.

I understand that Howard Webb (of Love Your Neighbour Network) is part of a Christian coalition formed to get maximum benefit from the Rugby World Cup and is attempting to mobilise New Zealand churches to see the event as a mission opportunity. People interested in learning more about this are welcomed to contact Howard by email, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
