FUTURE OF FORESTRY – Travel III

travelIn 2006, the members of worship group Something Like Silas decided to shelve their fairly familiar Brit-rock sound and regroup under the name Future of Forestry.

This “new” group’s M.O. was more Sigur Ros than Coldplay: meandering and artistic.

Future of Forestry still make worship music after a fashion, but their worship is more often expressed instrumentally. The lyrics are impressionistic for the most part: word pictures drifting in and out of focus, at times challenging and at times confessional.

“Protection” could fit comfortably on a Mute Math album, while “Your Day’s Not Over” sounds so much like Radiohead that it’s almost distracting. That song is the only slight misstep here though. The rest of the songs on this six-song EP (the third in a series) are moody and darkly gorgeous.

If you are like me, and sometimes find Christian music either too derivative or too obvious, Future of Forestry make a very welcome noise. They are inspired, innovative and well worth your time.
