The Orange County Supertones – ReUnite

reuniteGreatest hits compilations are always a little hard to evaluate. At best, they potentially expose the uninitiated to new music, but the problem is that fans of the band will probably already own all the songs. So it is with ReUnite, itself a sort of revision of the previous O.C. Supertones greatest hits collection, Unite.

The upside here is modest: this new version includes the original versions of “Adonai” and “Supertones Strike Back,” rather than their unnecessary remakes.

The downside is large, though: this version has eight fewer songs than Unite did. The tracks that miss out are perplexing, too. There’s no “Jury Duty,” no “Return Of The Revolutio’,” no “Superfly.” Still, what ReUnite does do is remind you what a great band these guys were. Sure, ska music is going to sound incredibly dated at this point, but it’s still a blast to listen to. I hope this collection garners the Supertones new fans, but my suggestion is that Hi-Fi Revival and Loud and Clear are better places to start.

Three out of five stars.
