THE LETTER BLACK – Hanging On By A Thread

cdblackSometimes Christian music just seems focus-grouped. Case in point: The Letter Black. Sadly, I suppose this band makes sense from a business perspective for its label. It has an attractive singer, the lyrics are very clear and Christian, and it sounds like Evanescence.

Unfortunately, the other side of that coin is that the singer can’t sing, the lyrics are lowest common denominator, and it sounds exactly like Evanescence. Maybe The Letter Black got a free pass because its members are well-intentioned Christians, or because the band will probably have a degree of success in the Christian industry. Either way, the fact is that good intentions and a clear message aren’t enough.

What about talent, commitment to craft, or trying to make a piece of art that is unique? The Letter Black has and do none of those things. Thousands of good sermons are available for free on iTunes, so I certainly don’t need to sit through an average one set to bad music, and neither do you.

One out of five stars.
