Dr Tallon of Auckland dismisses creation-supportive science as “nonsense” and speaks of University “established scientific knowledge.” One paragraph shows he obviously does not agree with Joe Fleener’s “inference from Scripture” about the impossibility of billions of years of evolution. As Dr Tallon seems more concerned about the science than the theology, he should research information from Institute for Creation Research, www.icr.org. ICR has numerous physical scientists (geology, biology etc.).
RATE (Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth) was an eight-year research project of ICR. It discovered incredible physical evidence that supports biblical truth of a young Earth. Many other studies have also shown that modern dating techniques are riddled with evolutionary assumptions.
Taking an approach in which the literal nature of what is clearly presented as history becomes allegory undermines the Christian faith. As a teenager, I saw this clearly, “what then can I trust?” Thankfully I held to my faith before I discovered Creation oriented scientists.
Julian Huxley, contemporary with Charles Darwin, had the position that, “if we can destroy Genesis, we can destroy the Christian faith.” Humanists want to do away with God. And they understood better than the theologians the implications of undermining the literal, historical nature of Genesis. That has been a main thrust of humanists ever since. As theologians – and laymen – have tried to compromise the Bible to fit ever-changing “scientific” pronouncements, Christians have been shipwrecked.
I have been around long enough to witness loud trumpeting of so-called “scientific” discoveries and later a very quiet, “oops.” But much of the erroneous information is perpetuated in textbooks.
Dr Tallon mentions “day” as part of his argument. When Genesis 1 uses the construction an evening and a morning, the third day, this is literal. There are other meanings of the word “day” but these double modifiers show which meaning in context.
Thy Word, oh God, stands forever.
